Basic Multiplication

The multiplication symbol is usually represented as ×

Multiplication is the process of repeated addition of one number with respect to another.

For example:

4 × 5 = 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20

This means you are adding 5, four times.

8 × 5 = 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 40

This means you are adding 5, eight times.

Properties of Multiplication

(1)  Commutative Property: Changing the order of the numbers does not change the product.

Example:

4 × 3 = 3 × 4.

(2) Associative Property: The grouping of numbers does not affect the product.

Example:

(3 × 4) × 8 = 3 × (4 × 8).

(3)  Multiplicative Identity: Any number multiplied by 1 is the number itself.

Example:

8 × 1 = 8

9 × 1 = 9

10 × 1 = 10

(4)  Zero Property: Any number multiplied by 0 is always 0.

Example:

9 × 0 = 0

10 × 0 = 0

11 × 0 = 0
